Kwanzaa--- a weeklong celebration of culture

Kwanzaa, derived from the phrase “matunda ya kwanza” (i.e.“first fruits” in Swahili), is a weeklong celebration of song, dance, African drum play, among other things, that culminates in a large traditional feast. The festival is intended to focus the family on “seven principles” (or Nguzo Saba)---unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.
